Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Gesture Synth?

Gesture Synth is an innovative web synthesizer that lets you play music using only hand gestures in front of your camera. It uses Google MediaPipe AI to detect 21 hand joint points in real-time, converting them into chords, melodies, and sound effects via the Web Audio API.

Is Gesture Synth free?

Yes, Gesture Synth is completely free and runs directly in your browser. No download, install, or account needed. Just open gesynth.com, allow camera access, and start playing.

What devices are supported?

Gesture Synth works on laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones with a camera and a modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari.

How do I play chords?

Raise your left hand in front of the camera. The number of extended fingers determines chords I–V. Index + pinky produces chords VI and VII. Tilt your wrist to switch Major/Minor.

Do I need an instrument or MIDI controller?

No. Gesture Synth only needs a standard webcam. No instrument or extra MIDI controller required.

What play modes are available?

Gesture (chords via hand gestures), Theremin (pitch from hand position), and Mono Piano. Also available: Arpeggiator, auto Bass, Metronome, and various scales — Major, Minor, Dorian, Blues, Pentatonic.

Is my camera data safe?

Yes. All processing happens locally on your device using MediaPipe AI. No images or video are sent to any server.
